THE EFFECT OF VEGETATION STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION TO RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEM'S RUN OFF IN UPPER CIMANUK WATERSHED, GARUT, WEST JAVA

One indicator that shows the stability of riparian ecosystems is the decrease of run-off. To stabilize riparian ecosystems, it is necessary to study the structure and composition of vegetation and its relation to surface flow. This study aims to determine the value of run-off in different types of stands. This research was conducted in Nagaracinta Village, Bayongbong District, Garut, West Java. Data collection was done by using Belt Transect method on 9 plots measuring 20x20 m on the left and right side of the river. The observation plot is divided into three types of land covers consisting mixed forest, plantation forest, and bamboo stands. Soil samples were sampled in each plot and then tested in the laboratory to obtain the Field Capacity Water (KAKL) data as the basis for determining the run off value using the Thronthwaite-Mather method. The results showed that the lowest run-off value was owned by mixed stands of 310.03 mm / year. The results showed that there was a relationship between run-off (y) with shrubs (x1), density (x2), and slope (x3) with the equation y = 291,195-0,027x1-0,001x2 + 0,921x3 (R2 = 0,818). The equation explains that increasing the parameters of shrubs abundance and stand density can decrease the run off values in riparian ecosystems of upper Cimanuk watershed. text
