SPATIAL VARIATION OF MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEMS RELATED TO SPATIAL EQUATORIAL RAINFALL PATTERN OVER INDONESIAN MARITIME CONTINENTS

This study is based on a general indication of the existence of varied types of convective systems in the equatorial region by several previous studies. Results show existence of 6 types of MCS with extents 30,400 up to 617,200 km2, duration vary 3 to 72 hours, and eccentricity 0,2 up to 0,97. Number of each type over the IMC region consist bimodal pattern with two peaks on March, April, and May (MAM) and September, October, and November (SON). Over equatorial rainfall region, the number of all MCSs reach 787 times/year, while the northern and southern regions outside the equatorial polygon region per annum rate reach 217 times/year and 571 times/year. Mature stage of MCS mostly occur at night to early morning. Typical of occurrence in this study was found the difference with US and China types of MCS in proporsion of amount between linear and circular types, where over US and China, linear types of MCS were more dominating than circular types, whereas proporsion amount over IMC between linear and circular types are balanced. Variation of monthly MCS amount over IMC are influenced by moisture transport convergence. High frequency pattern of MCSs location are similar with low level moisture transport convergence. text |
