Since 2012 Galunggung Volcano has been surveyed for geothermal evaluation, but due to limited survey, there are so many geological features which control geothermal system, that have not been mapped well. This research aims to know the geological condition of Galunggung Volcano which includes: its geomorphology, geology, volcanostratigraphy, and geological structures as well as evaluating the geothermal potentials based on volcanic maturity.
Geomorphological units of research area comprise 6 units, namely: Galunggung Eruption Crater Unit, Galunggung Lava-Pyroclastic Flow Slope Unit, Galunggung Lahar-Pyroclastic Flow Slope Unit, Galunggung Pyroclastic Flow Valley Unit, Karacak Pyroclastic Flow Slope Unit, and Karacak Pyroclastic Flow Ridge Unit. The volcanostratigraphy consists of three khuluk, which are: Khuluk Karacak, Talagabodas, and Galunggung. The rocks found in this research area include andecite, basalt, pyroclastic breccia, and tuf-lapillistone deposit which
are divided into 15 unofficial units based on: the component of rocks, deposition mechanism, sources, and the timing of formation. Geological structure in the research area consists of a secondary structure which are Galunggung Crater Normal Fault, Cikunir Normal Fault, and
Cibadak Normal Fault.
Based on the volcanic maturity evaluation, Galunggung Volcano has a good geothermal potential according to the following criteria: Galunggung Volcano volume is more than 50 km3, Galunggung Volcano magma evolution is mature, Galunggung Volcano age is between 50.000 and 200.000 years, Galunggung Volcano had central eruption, and Galunggung Volcano has surface manifestation consist of several springs of thermal water that emerge from the contact between the pyroclastic flow breccias and older deposits along the Cipanas River.
text
