Summary:Pressure surge refers to the pressure produced by a change in velocity of the moving fluid. Pressure surge can cause significant damage to pipelines, producing leaks and ruptures. Adequate surge protection is needed in order to minimize significant downtime in process plants and distribution systems, and increase life expectancy of the pipelines. <br /> <br /> This study focused on the influence of changes in fluid flow velocity, valve closing time and valve opening sizes towards generation of pressure surges in pipelines. By analyzing these factors, maximum pressure surges could be calculated and then compared to Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) of the pipelines to ensure safe operations.
