Description
Summary:Cell transmission model, abbreviated as CTM, is a macroscopic model that describes the movement of traffic flow over time and space in terms of a simple finite difference formula. Another model commonly used to study traffic flow is the kinematic wave model. Apparently, CTM can be related to kinematic wave model with a triangular or trapezoidal flux function. In this article, restricting to homogeneous cells, properties of CTM were discussed in great detail. We will discuss two approaches; the analytical method of characteristic, and the numerical CTM, which are shown to be comparable. It is shown that CTM can simulate appropriate changes in density at locations where the hydrodynamic theory called for shockwave and rarefaction wave. In the case of road with junction, a slight modification of the CTM (with one additional parameter) was used, and simulation result show a good comparison with the analytical formula. Next, using CTM result, we further discuss on how to get the average travel time.
