Summary: | Household hazardous waste (HHW) is residue from household product that contain hazardous characteristics are corrosive, toxic, flammable, and reactive materials such as paints, batteries, lamps, and cleaners. According to Undang-Undang No. 18/2008, HHW is categorized as specific waste because it contains hazardous material that require special treatment. Proportion of HHW in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is very small, typically about 1 percent, so it was treated the same as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) start from sorting and storage at the source until final disposal. Accumulation of HHW in domestic landfill will increase the potential pollutions to ground and surface waters. Therefore, it is important for Cimahi to have a special management system and facility of HHW to minimize negative impact to human and environment. Data obtained by household waste sampling to 145 household in different type (non permanent, semi permanent, and permanent) and questionnaires to 100 respondent to get information about waste generation, composition, and community knowledge about HHW. Suggested management system of HHW include minimization, storage and separation of HHW from the source, door-to-door collection by community request with minimum pick up are 0,5 kg, temporary storage in collection facility, and transport to treatment or recycling area. The collection facility is designed to handle 2.32 tons/day of HHW and reduction of HHW transported for further treatment up to 20%. To eliminate the risk, the container for storing HHW are designed in correspondence with the characteristic of waste stored. The container selected are fiber drum, plastic drum, metal drum, and cubic yard box with a volume 200 L and 800 L. In addition, collection facility building equipped with a portable fire extinguisher, spill storage, natural ventilation, and artificial ventilation such as exhaust fan. <br />
