It can be seen from the rampant involvement of Indonesian artists in

biennial events in other countries. Biennials open opportunities for local artists to show themselves in the flow of contemporary international art. On the other hand,

artists are also obliged to fulfill the interests of the organizing institution, which makes the art-making system for biennial is project-based. Consequently, artists

are not only preoccupied with aesthetic considerations but also managerial problems. Based on this background, this study aims to examine the making of an artwork from the perspective of project management.

Titarubi was chosen as the sample of this study because she is an Indonesian artist who has experience in making large-scale works for international institutions.

There are two problems that are questioned in this study; First, how is the history of project management application in Titarubi’s career? Second, how did Titarubi

manage the making of History of Repeats Itself in her participation in the 2016 Singapore Biennale? The theories used are Project Management Theory from

Project Management Institute, Art Management from Giep Hagoort, and Art as a Collective Activity from Howard Becker.

This study first examines the history of Titarubi's works in general to look for her distinctive management application. After that, a specific study was carried out on the making of the ‘History Repeats Itself’ artwork from the perspective of project management. This research explains the project into four stages; Conceptual Stage,

Planning Stage, Implementation Stage, and Termination Stage. It also describes the types of management needed in it, such as time management, cost management, and human resources management. Through an assessment of those managerial spects, a work pattern that shows the interdependence between agents in an art project is found.

The research result shows that the art project management that Titarubi carried out has special characteristics; First, Titarubi as an artist positions herself as a

project leader who leads a special work team. Second, the effectiveness is relative, the absolute goal of the project is to realize the idea of the artist. Third, Titarubi as an artist and an executor of the project and the institutions of the Singapore Biennale as a stakeholder occupy an equal position. Titarubi is also the holder of

all final decisions about the work. This research also shows that managers’ position is very important to lighten the work of artists, so that artist can focus on realizing

their ideas while remain balanced in managerial aspects. text
