VERTICAL CONTAMINANT TRANSPORT MODEL OF LUBRICANTS IN VADOSE ZONE USING NUMERICAL METHOD

There are many soil contamination by lubricants in Indonesia, lubricants that are contaminate the soil will be dissolved by water and transport through the vadose zone vertically to the groundwater below. To understand the movement of those contaminant model is needed to predict its movement. In this research mathematical model that are solved using numerical method with two different scheme, explicit and implicit, will be used to produce a good result that can describe lubricants movement in the vadose zone. Later the result is verified using already published model and laboratory simulation that are adjust to model condition using statistical analysis. Laboratory simulation is conducted by using infiltration column with 10 cm in width and 30 cm in length and it packed with two different soil, sand and loamy sand, in each simulation. The flow in the column maintained constant during the simulation and the soil condition is unsaturated. The water used in this research was made of lubricants that are dissolved in the tap water and the concentration is known. After the verification process, sensitivity analysis and model calibration is conducted so the model give more likely results compare to the laboratory simulation data. The result of the water movement in unsaturated zone done is verified and after the calibration process give good results and show no significance difference to the laboratory data, and in this process we also get that explicit scheme is produced better results than implicit scheme, so the contaminant transport model is conducted using explicit scheme. For contaminant transport model the verification with the Hydrus-1D result not given statisfactory reults as water movement modelling, so does the verification conducted using laboratory simulation data. This is due to the hydrodinamc dispersion coefficient that are used in this research is gained from literature not from laboratory experiment so the condition is different. Beside that, the reaction between the lubricants and the soil used not represent the reaction that happened in the actual condition, so the model is not good enough for describing the actual data. Therefore for further research is suggested to make an empiric hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient model based on the soil used so and to evalu text
