Summary: |
Connecting rod is one component of the engine that works to change the piston straight motion into a rotaion crank shaft. Connecting rods are designed to be strength, stiffnes against the strain and lightweight. In general, connecting rod is designed in the form of H or I profile for strenth and lightweight and the material used is steel. Steel material tends to be heavier and has a good stretching strength, for it needed a solution using a lighter material but has a steel-like strength. One of the materials to be used is a composite material arranged of material Al 2024 with reinforcement.
Thus, this study aims to analyze load, stress and strain on connecting rods of various materials, especially Al 2024 materials with dimensional variations, shapes on reinforcement and compared with Steel and Aluminum materials. The analysis used is Finite Element Method (FEM) approach with software for modeling is Solidworks and for analysis used ANSYS. The result of the simulation shows the connecting rod dimension of I profile height 10 mm with material of Al 2024 wand 42CrMo4 material reinforcement, so that it can reduce the weight of connectig rod by 38%. Maximum deformation of 0.267 mm, maximum stress 579.53 MPa, and maximum strain 0.0004366.
