Description
Summary:
Hermetia illucens or black soldier fly (BSF) is an insect that has the ability to function as an organic waste bioconversion agent at the larval phase. One of the products of this bioconversion process is leachate, which can be utilized as liquid organic fertilizer. A study of leachate derived from bioconversion of vegetable and fruit waste by BSF larvae effect on nitrogen uptake and chlorophyll content of romaine lettuce in hydroponic floating raft system was carried out. The purpose of this study was to compare the nitrogen uptake and chlorophyll content of romaine lettuce cultivated with BSF leachate and AB mix as the nutrition source. Nutritional treatments given were 100% AB mix, 75% AB mix : 25% leachate, 50% AB mix : 50% leachate, 25% AB mix : 75% leachate, and 100% leachate. Each treatment used five (5) plants and was replicated five (5) times. The results of this study showed that the nutritional treatment with the highest to lowest nitrogen uptake consecutively was 100% AB mix (135,62 mg/plant), 75% AB mix : 25% leachate (116.69 mg/plant), 50% AB mix : 50% leachate (72.21 mg/plant), 25% AB mix : 75% leachate (45.11 mg/plant), and 100% leachate (7.28 mg/plant). Plants treated with 100% AB mix also gave the highest amount of a,b, and total chlorophyll content observation result (7.49 ; 3.04 ; 10.57 mg / L), statistically significant compared to 50% AB mix : 50% leachate (6, 15 ; 2,38 ; 8,55 mg / L) and 100% leachate treatment (1,68 ; 0,71 ; 2,39 mg / L) (Duncan ? = 0.05). From the results of the study, it can also be concluded that nitrogen uptake affects the dry weight of romaine lettuce and chlorophyll content affects the wet weight of romaine lettuce (Pearson correlation).
