Description
Summary:
Calendar is one of the important aspects for Javanese people whose life are still close to the belief of the existence of good and bad days to do lots of activities. They have their authentic calendar system that have already been used since the 8th century, and as the time goes by, it changes in many aspects including its main reference (Sun and Moon). Not only the calendar that can be used in general, it turns out that Javanese people also have another calendar system to organize an activity which have already been their main source of living for centuries, that is farming.

The calendar system which finally established at 1855 as Pranatamangsa calendar is based on the knowledge of titen (observing recur phenomenon) that occur at their surroundings, or even phenomenon related to the appearance of sky objects at the certain direction and time. Despite observing the Sun’s shadow, there are also several sky objects which appearance are also used as a reference of the beginning of farming seasons such as Sapigumarang, Tagih, Banyakangrem, Jarandhawuk, Gotongmayit, Bimasakti, Lumbung, Waluku, Wuluh, dan Wulanjar Ngirim. Therefore, it can be said that aside from natural factors that directly affects the farming activities, astronomy is also a part of Pranatamangsa calendar.

Research that has been done for this thesis is focused to identify those sky objects from several aspects such as the background of the naming and also the direction and time of their appearance at the sky if they are observed from Central Java area, especially Boyolali.
