Description
Summary:
Kadipaten Pakualaman as one of the cultural heritage sites in Yogyakarta has experienced spatial character changes due to the new development issue. Modern development, urban densification, and faded local tradition were threating Pakualaman identity. Particular consideration were needed for the development. Pakualaman spatial rearrangement through preservation becomes the idea to maintain the sustainability of the spatial identity. The purpose of the rearrangement is to maintain the integrity and authenticity of Pakualaman area through value based approach by looking at the significance values of the spatial character both tangible and intangible, then connected them with a series of urban design elements using descriptive method. Historical analyisis and existing identification of Pakualaman were also analyzed to determine the concepts, problems, and potentials occured within the area through synchronic-diachronic and descriptive methods. The result of the research shows that Pakualaman spatial arrangement should be based on the Javanese cosmology concept such as the Catur Gatra Tunggal (four main elements of function) and four concentric circle that determine the area structure. Intervention of urban design elements interventions were subjecting to the locals and visitors. Design strategies in conducting the interventions are first, spatial quality improvement in activity support, accessibility, and green open space, and second, spatial character preservation on preservation, land use, intensity, and building mass.
