CONTAMINATION PROFILE OF ORGANOCHLORINE AND ORGANOPHOSPHATE PESTICIDES IN WATER AND SEDIMENT FROM CIKERUH RIVER, BANDUNG AND SUMEDANG REGENCY

The use of organochlorine pesticides has been banned because of its persistence in nature. In response to this ban the agricultural sector replaces organochlorine pesticides with organophosphate pesticides that are more easily degraded, but organophosphoric pesticides are generally more toxic....

In response to this ban the agricultural sector replaces organochlorine pesticides with organophosphate pesticides that are more easily degraded, but organophosphoric pesticides are generally more toxic. Several studies in the Upper Citarum Watershed find residues of organochlorine pesticides in water and sediment. Cikeruh River is part of the Upper Citarum Watershed. This research was conducted to determine the concentration of organochlorine pesticide and organophosphate in water and sediment of Cikeruh River and to illustrate the

contamination profile. Water and sediment samples were taken from ten points along the river, then analyzed using gas chromatography method to determine the pesticide concentration. Organochlorine pesticides in the form of lindan (?-BHC) and endrin were detected in sediment samples with concentrations of 1.409-7.376 ppb and 1.01-1.915 ppb. Organochlorine pesticides were not detected in all water samples. Organophosphate pesticides were detected in all water samples with concentrations of 1.71-24.96 ppb (diazinon), 7.66-223.61 ppb (chlorpyrifos), 3.85-59.48 ppb (malathion), 1.02-8.26 ppb (fenitrothion), 1.3-13.04 ppb (parathion), 2.44-4.87 ppb (methidathion), and 0.77-11.61 ppb (profenofos). While organophosphate pesticides were detected in sediment samples with concentrations of 15.75-42.99 ppb (diazinon), 7.22-60.06 ppb klorpirifos), 10.67-65.77 ppb (malathion), 3.48-21.06 ppb (fenitrothion), 1.78-70.93 ppb (parathion), 5.48-14.54 ppb (methidathion), and 2.53-49,72 ppb (profenofos). Chlorpyrifos had in water samples whereas parathion had the highest concentration in sediment samples. No correlation was found between pesticide concentrations in water and sediment. The presence of organochlorine pesticides and organophosphates in Cikeruh River can be attributed to agricultural activities and settlements around the river. text
