The use of coal ash as a raw material in production

process is known to cause lung problems for workers such as pneumoconiosis and cancer (caused by heavy metals contained in it). The raw materials used in the manufacture of concrete paving blocks are coal ash, cement, and sand. Particulate matter in concrete paving block industries is generated from processes of stockpiling, loading-unloading of raw materials, milling, mixing, and moulding. The manufacturing processes can cause the dispersion of particulate matter in the air which can potentially result in exposure of workers. Exposure of particulate in low concentrations

for a long time can cause lung disorders such as, restriction, obstruction, or both. The purpose of this research is to determine the risk of industrial workers in Jati village area, in terms of exposure to respired particulate. This study is a analytic epidemiology which uses cross-sectional method. The research investigated 46 respondents with the distribution of 25 exposed and 21 unexposed. The respired particulate is measured by personal dust sampler, while lung capacity (FEV1.0) is measured with spirometer. The average weight of respired particulate are, 1.082 mg/m3 in exposed respondents is and 0.314 mg/m3 in those unexposed. The average of HI for respired particulate exposure in exposed respondents is, 0.360 and in those unexposed is, 0.105. The odds ratio for lung disorder for exposed respondents is, 4.6 times greater than those unexposed.
text
