Summary: |
Asphalt pavement damage in Indonesia today is mostly caused by increased traffic and overloading. In addition, Indonesia is a tropical country with high rainfall in most of its regions. Combination of these factors contributes significant damage to road pavement in Indonesia. One of solutions to improve performance and improve moisture susceptibilty in pavement is to use an asphalt mixture that is modified using a polymer (Polymer Modified Asphalt). In this study, Styrene-ButadyneStyrene (SBS) was used in the Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixture.
Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) test is considered to be the most widely used test to evaluate mosture susceptiblity of asphalt mixtures, with output parameter in the form of Indirect Tensile Strength Ratio (ITSR). In ITS test the process is to determine the ratio of indirect tensile strength of asphalt mixtures samples before and after water conditioning. Meanwhile, Dynamic Modulus test lately have been increasingly used widely, especially as the main input on Empirical-Mechanistic based pavement design. In this study, Dynamic Modulus test will be used to evaluate the moisture suscpetibility of asphalt mixtures, with output parameter in the form of Dynamic Modulus Ratio (DMR).
The use of 1% SBS modified asphalt in the AC-WC mixture produced higher ITSR and DMR values than the AC-WC Pen 60/70 mixture. The ITSR values for ACWC Pen 60/70 is 85.4% and for AC-WC mod SBS is 89.5%, while the average DMR values for AC-WC Pen 60/70 is 83.4% and for AC-WC mod SBS is 90.8%. At the testing temperature of 35 ° C the AC-WC Pen 60/70 mixtures showed a significant decrease in the value of Dynamic Modulus, especially at 1 and 10 Hz loading frequencies, which were 21% and 16% respectively. The decrease is twice as large as Dynamic Modulus decrease of AC-WC mod SBS, which were 10% and 8%.
