Description
Summary:
Textile industry is one of the biggest industries in Indonesia even in the world. One of major problems which caused by textile industry is dye waste produced. Methylene blue is a dye which often to use in textile industry. Methylene blue is difficult to be degraded, have a toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic on human beings. Several methods to remove methylene blue in wastewater have been developed, but this methods may be less effective because the cost of its operation is high and difficult to applied. Adsorption is the one of effective method, simple, and low cost to remove methylene blue in wastewater. In this study, synthesis of the adsorbent was done by reaction between Ca2+ and sodium alginate ion in 1% honey solution. Calcium alginate sheets are grinded by mortar to get calcium alginate powder. Adsorbent has been synthesized were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Optimum conditions were tested in variation of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of methylene blue, and contact time. The results of study is showed that optimum adsorption occurred at pH 4, initial dye concentration of 700 ppm, contact time at 75 minutes with adsorbent dosage 0,025 g. The process of methylene blue adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model with maximum capacity of adsorption is 526 mg.g-1. The results of kinetic study is showed that methylene blue adsorption followed pseudo-second-order model. Adsorbent has been used for adsorption-desorption cycles for three cycles.
