Summary: |
Ti-6Al-4V is a titanium alloy commonly used for various components operating at high temperatures. The experiment was done to observe the high temperature corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V with and without KCl deposit in air environment at temperatures 600oC, 700oC, and 800oC. The KCl salt was heated to 60oC then sprayed on the entire surface of the specimens. By this method, the existing KCl salt deposit on the surface of the specimen was expected to be homogeneous and weighs about 3-4 mg/cm2. The high temperature corrosion treatment in the specimen was carried out for 96 hours in electric furnace. On each specimen a measurement of mass changes after corrosion of high temperature was observed. The mechanisment of high temperature corrosion in this study is estimated by reaction Ti(s) + 2Cl2(g) ↔ TiCl4(g). The presence of chlorine gas accelerated the oxidation process in the specimen. The rate of mass increase was proportional with the length of oxidation. It is expected as a result of Al2O3, TiO2, and K-Ti-O formation.
|
