Small and intermediary cities potentially become an inclusive and sustainable urban settlements, among over-urbanized, inequality, and disparities in larger cities or Indonesia in general. Unfortunately, those cities aren't managed and maintained as it supposed to be. Still research about it remains rare. This exploratory research tried to identify the condition of small and intermediary cities in Indonesia, and how it affects its region. We were using descriptive analysis, correlation, and regression as research method to analyze demographic, social, economic, regulatory, and spatial data. The result shows small and intermediary cities in compare with larger cities, have made a worse regional development progress; mainly outside Java. The autonomous small and intermediary cities in Indonesia represent different characteristic regarding intermediary traits. Cities in Sumatera are the most suitable in carrying the role as small and intermediary city. While cities outside Java pose primary city traits. These cities along with urban center on regency area, were the small and intermediary city's group which account for enhancing total regional economic, reduce poverty, and increase household's income. <br /> <p align="justify"> text |
