LABORATORY STUDY OF UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH CHANGE TOWARDS SANDSTONE DURING AND AFTER HEATING PROCESS ON TEMPERATURE 200℃, 400℃, AND 600℃

The presence of thermal sources in the underground excavation, either naturally or artificially, will certainly provide a significant influence on the geomechanical parameters of the rock around the underground excavation. This study will discuss about the effect of varying tempreatures on the compr...

This study will discuss about the effect of varying tempreatures on the compressive strength of sandstone tested while being heated and after heating. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the uniaxial compressive strength of sandstone before and when heated, before and after heating, and when and after heating at a temperature of 200 ℃, 400 ℃ and 600 ℃.

The test is a uniaxial compressive strength test on rock samples when heated in a heating device placed on a compressive strength test apparatus, besides also testing uniaxial compressive strength on rock samples at room temperature, after previously heated in a furnace placed in Laboratory of the Solid Oxide System, ITB Metallurgical Engineering Study Program. The heating in each furnace is done at a certain rate and after reaching the desired temperature, the heating device temperature is kept constant for 30 minutes and then tested the rock samples, while the temperature of the furnace in the laboratory is kept constant for 30 minutes and the rock samples are removed from the furnace after it reaches room temperature, then tested.

The result of this research is the compressive strength of rock samples both when heated and after heating increases with increasing temperature and higher than the compressive strength of rock samples before heating, except for the compressive strength of the rock samples after being heated at 200 ℃, which is lower than rock samples before being heated. In addition, the compressive strength of rock samples when heated is higher than that after heating. text
