Products that can be made from spent coffee grounds is biodiesel, bio-oil, fertilizer, and other minor components. This study aims to make biodiesel from spent coffee ground. Biodiesel is a fuel consisting of an alkyl ester mixture of long chain fatty acids, which is used as an alternative to fuel for diesel engines.

The process of making biodiesel from spent coffee grounds consists of three main stages, namely the extraction, esterification, and transesterification process. In this study the extraction process was carried out by using the Soxhlet extractor using hexane solvent, a mixture of acetone and hexane, ethanol, toluene, and a mixture of acetone and toluene. The time spent during the extraction process is 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. The esterification process is used to decrease acid value or free fatty acid content contained in the coffee oil before entering the transesterification process, since the acid numbers contained in the spent coffee ground oil are very high. The esterification process using metanol and sulfuric acid catalyst, while the transesterification process using methanol and KOH catalyst in the reaction process. The washing process is needed after the transesterification process to remove residual glycerol present in the biodiesel.

In this study the analysis was performed by measurement of density, viscosity, acid value, total glycerol, saponification value, and iodine value according to SNI 7182: 2015. All biodiesel are of value in accordance with the limit of SNI 7182: 2015 except the iodine number in the solvent mixture of acetone and hexane, ethanol, toluene, and acetone and toluene mixtures. Results of GC (gas chromatopraghy) show iodine levels 105.6 until 128.13 because many linoleic acid in the biodiesel content.
text
