Summary: | Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) has many potential for any field due to its high mechanical strength, wide surface area, non-toxic, and biodegradable. In this research, CNF were synthesized using the semi-mechanical method. First, office paper as raw material passing chemical pretreatment using KOH and NaClO2 to leach hemicellulose and lignin respectively. Next, mechanical disintegration were done by conducting cellulosic solution in ultra-turrax sonicator for 100 minutes, 140 minutes, and 180 minutes. The dried samples then characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Universal Testing Machine, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Thermogravimetry Analyzer (TGA). FTIR characterization result showed that cellulose was formed, and no more hemicellulose and lignin content. Tensile strength was measured using Universal Testing Machine, the best result is the 140 minutes mechanical treated sample, up to 105.8 MPa. It was bigger than the raw materials, 49,0 MPa. SEM image showed the surface morphology of the sample as nanofiber with 32.4 nm in diameters and micrometers length. The synthesized sample exhibit a good thermal stability. |
