This specific process is needed in order to obtain the 3D model of specific object, so that further design such as features addition or other specific modification can be done through 3D remodeling process. There are several tools available in the market that can be used for purpose of 3D scanning, such as laser scanning probe. The laser scanning probe is an additional probe specifically designed for 3D scanning purpose that must be used with a coordinate measuring machine. The result obtained from scanning with laser scanning probe is in form of point cloud, a cloud of points each representing the coordinate of a single cell wich is a surface of the actual object. This point cloud requires a further process to become a complete 3D form, the point cloud must be transformed into a polygon mesh first.

Polygon mesh is a collection of vertices, edges and faces that defines the shape of a polyhedral object in 3D computer graphics and solid modeling. The quality of polygon mesh is determined by several factors, such as the characteristic of surface of the scanned object. Surface with a very smooth countour is undesired for scanning because the reflections can cause noise and reduce overall quality of the mesh.

In this final project, a prismatic specimen with high reflectance surface characteristic will be scanned using laser scanning probe, therefore a model for such a scan result will be obtained through 3d modelling process. Preparation of surface treatment especially surface coating method made in purpose of optimization in scanning process. In the remodeling process, optimization also made with 3D remodeling software features so that the resulting model can be considered accurate to the actual object. Comparation of each models undergo different optimization method will be discussed in the end.
text
