Summary: |
Indonesia needs new and renewable energy sources due to high increase of energy consumption. One of renewable energy source could come from the ocean by using its waves energy. Ocean wave energy obtained by converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy using wave converter in the form of floating structure shaped spar and disc. That structure will pitch over as the wave comes and the pitch motion will be distributed to a generator to produce electrical energy. This study aims to determine the design of floating structures which are effective to be used as a wave energy conversion device. A structure would be considered effective if it produces a pitch value between 0.5o-25o to the condition of 0.5-5 meter wave height with wave periods of 2-19 seconds. In this study, the structure is modeled with draught and diameter variation using Hydrostar software, while modeling the pitch response of the structure are done by Ariane software. Furthermore, the pitch response of the structure will be calculated the amount of power generated. The amount of power that can be converted by the structure is influenced by pitch motion produced and the coefficient of damping structures. From this research it is known that the disk-shaped structure produces the greatest power to capture width, reaching 12m for waves with wave period more than 4 seconds, while for the incident wave with wave period less than 4 seconds can be converted to the capture width 7m by spar-shaped structure with a draft of 2m and 5m high. The larger the dimensions of the structure, the greater the power that can be converted for the further range of wave periods can be converted energy.
|
