Summary: | Every city has historic area as a pioneer and gave identity to the city. As the times

developed, the historical area became part of the development of the cuty with a

variety of new needs that continued to emerge. The emergence of new buildings in

the historic area does not seem to blend with the environment, such as standing

alone and not having a spatial and visual relationship with the environment. In

developed countries, many new buildings have built, but the emergence of new

buildings can actually stand side by side with old buildings, supporting the physical

and function of the old buildings without reducing the character of the area.

The Quinine Factory Area is the oldest historical or industrial industrial estate in

the city of Bandung, which is currently owned by PT Kimia Farma and has

obsolescence. Some old buildings have not been used because they no longer

produce quinine pills and do not meet factory building standards. In addition, there

are industrial heritage in Indonesia that are not developed and utilized as a new

function. Whereas abroad there have been many examples of former industrial

buildings that were developed and even combined with the addition of new

buildings as supporting old buildings.

With this background, this thesis aims to study the principles of designing new

buildings in historical areas through various studies simulated into design. The

study conducted was related to the role of new buildings in the area, forms of

adaptation of old buildings, and the tendency of new functions of old buildings and

new buildings. Then combined with analysis related to the area and existing studies

in determining the significance of regional culture. Study and analysis are

synthesized into design criteria and concepts. The resulting design is in the form of

some form of old building adaptation such as adaptive reuse, new kernel, and new

shell and new buildings with the incorporation of installation, insertion,

intervention. The design is not only physical, but also considers the development of

the region in the future. The design is considered good if the attitude of new

buildings can give different characters without losing the context and significance

of the historical area. |
