Description
Summary:Cemeti Art House and Selasar Sunaryo Art Space are two pioneers in initiating artists' programs in Yogyakarta and Bandung. After running for 20 years since the annual Bursaries for Artists activity, now Cemeti Art House has held more than 20 artists' programs since its first program, Landing Soon, in 2006. Selasar Sunaryo Art Space also participated in the UNESCO-ASCHBERG program since 2001 and then initiated its first artist program in 2011. The research was conducted through data collection interviews with several speakers and literature studies from printed publications and catalogs of artist-in-residence programs in Yogyakarta and Bandung. This research as well as limiting itself to the implementation of HotWave # 2, HotWave # 3, and Transit # 1 residency program which were all conducted in 2011, where the two art spaces held artist-in-residence program at the same year.

Based on the analysis of the research, the main characteristic that emerged in these two programs was how each art spaces attempted to dismantle participant artists' work practices; Cemeti Art House breaks the physical space boundary through exploration of themes and topics that involve the community more, while Selasar Sunaryo Art Space tries to explore the inner side of the participant's artists and then their reflections are able to produce negotiated results from new habituations and references. The governance pattern of Cemeti Art House which tends to be organic provides flexibility for each program to be modified and adapted to the needs of the field. Where Selasar Sunaryo Art Space does not open itself to new staff recruitment, it tends to have a long chain of coordination and does not open up training opportunities for young art workers who want to learn to manage the artist's living program.

It can be seen that there are nine aspects that can distinguish the artist's living program, which includes the program organizer, the participant admission process, the work-studio-based or community-based practice base, information distribution base mentorship, lecture, in-house curator, or independent discussion, funding, duration, length of stay and living conditions, final results of the residency period, and involvement of other parties outside the organizer and participants. In the managerial aspect, five different categories of work were found in the implementation of the artist's program of residence, including planning, regarding HR and workloads; coordination between departments, participants, and control. While the five aspects that can measure the completeness of the implementation of the artist's program are the fulfillment of basic needs, management of participants; archiving of program documents, implementation of managerial work; and complement the program. This discovery is based on the idealism that emerged from the HotWave # 2, HotWave # 3, and Transit # 1 programs in 2011. Hopefully this research can become a starting point for the formation of an artist's typology program as a development program for artists or other art practitioners.
