Summary:<p align="justify">Nowdays, exploration target in Salawati basin just target the Tertiary rocks and few stakeholders to make exploration in pre-Tertiary rocks. TBF-1X well is one of exploration well in Salawati basin that penetrates the pre-Tertiary rocks. Status of this well is plugged and abandoned by the well report. Therefore, the failure of TBF-1X that targeting pre-Tertiary, needs to be studied more carefully to get better information of pre-Tertiary rocks. <br /> <br /> The research was conducted by reviewing and analyzing TBF-1X well and 28 line sections. Analysis was conducted on the basin analysis and petroleum system, with the aim to determine the basin evolution and factors that influence the failure of TBF-1X well from the geology side. <br /> <br /> The results of the analysis have shown the potential of the source rock and reservoir pre-Tertiary rocks are found on Upper Aifam Group, which is pre-rift sediment. Potential source rock in the interval 3350 - 3614.2 m, and total thickness about 194.2 m. Potential reservoir rock in the interval 2560 - 3601 m consist of several layers, with a total thickness about 132 m and porosity 10 - 35%. Hydrocarbon maturity is found at 3350 – 5100 m. TBF-1X drilled at anticline trap, but based on the interpretation showed that TBF-1X was drilled on the dissected anticline, not at the top of the anticline. Seal rock found on the upper Aifam Group, which consist of Kopai Formation, Demu/Lelinta Formation, and Jass Formation, with total thickness 524.51 m. Based on the seal capacity analysis shows that seal rock thickness of gas is 254.84 m and oil is 891,94 m, therefore seal rock can withstand a gas leak, but if the reservoir filled by oil it would pass the existing fracture. The main cause of failure drilling TBF-1X is hydrocarbon migration pathways that does not lead to location of TBF-1X, so the accumulation of hydrocarbon in the drilling location is not found.<p align="justify">
