Summary:Soil stabilization is the treatment of soil to improve it and enable it to serve as a better road construction material. Cement and lime are materials long recognized for this purpose. The addition of cement or lime to a subgrade is intended to improve its engineering properties, thereby permitting a thinner pavement structure to be used. The work described in this thesis was concerned with a comparison of the efficiency and cost of cement and lime as agents for stabilizing a silty sand. Laboratory test results showed that the curing process with lime treated soils is very slow compared to cement treated soils. It is clear that for the same cost, cement treated soils give higher strength than lime treated soils and when the same strength is achieved, the cost of cement treated soils is lower than that of lime treated soils. Thus the use of cement for stabilizing silty sand is economically viable.
