This resulted in the massive developments of tourist areas, which exudes not only positive impacts but also negative externalities to the surrounding environment, especially related to the carrying capacity and the quality of the natural environment. One of them is the high level of air pollution and congestion caused by the increasing flow of movement to and within the tourism area. To overcome this, the application of green transportation as a basic concept of urban transportation provision needs to be done in order to be able to reduce the environmental burden emerging from transportation activities and move to a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation. In that concept, the role of walking mode becomes increasingly important not only as a mode of environmental transport but as a primary mode of large-scale movement. In Indonesia, Gianyar Regency and Ubud Tourism Area strive to implement the use of non-motorized transportation as the main transportation mode. But there is no study on the value of existing walkability in Ubud Tourism Area today. This research aims to assess the level of walkability in Ubud Tourism Area and recommendations for improvement using indicators compiled using a comparison of walkability indices used globally. The method used is descriptive-qualitative method that juxtaposed with the results of content analysis on existing walkability indexes. Results show that the support level of Ubud Tourism Area on walking activities is currently adequate, with the highest score being in the security and safety category and the lowest value in connectivity and continuity. It is necessary to improve the pedestrian infrastructure on the comfort and convenience side through the widening and completion of the sidewalk, the connectivity and continuity side through the provision of crossing aids and supporting modes, as well as on the security and comfort side through the application of traffic calming measures and buffer zone arrangements.

Keywords: walkability, walking infrastructure, tourism area, Ubud

text
