Description
Summary:This thesis examines the engineering properties of Tanjung Enim Colliery Shale and considers the extent to which it can be used in road construction. Based on the laboratory performance of Tanjung Enim Colliery Shale it is concluded that the burnt colliery shale is suitable for use as a granular subbase and as road base materials in its natural condition (i.e. without the need to use admixtures). The unburnt colliery shale, however, is significantly affected by water and for use in road construction it should be treated with an admixture (e.g. Portland Cement type I). Laboratory test results show that about 8% of Portland cement by weight is sufficient to stabilize the unburnt colliery shale and produce a satisfactory road making material .
