It was not easy to find suitable sites which met the criteria adopted in this study, but 4 sites were chosen, all situated in west Java. Vehicles were classified into three categories, light vehicles, heavy vehicles and motorcycles. The data collection consisted of observations during six minute intervals. For each six nimute period the speed was weighted propotionally to the flow during that period. The speed flow relationships were obtained by a multiple regression method using a micro computer. The relationships showed that the speed decreased as the flow increased, and at all four sites studied the speed-flow relationships could be adequately represented by straight lines with statistically significant correlation coefficients. There were differences in speed between the sites which could not be explained from the data available. Particularly site 1 situated on the road between Jakarta and Bandung had a higher average speed than the other sites. One possible explanation might be the low ratio of heavy vehicles at this site ( site 1: 15%, site 2: 19%, site 3: 26% and site 4: 55% ). Light vehicles were always faster than heavy vehicles, which in term were faster than motorcycles. Speeds in Indonesia were 8 - 40 % slower than would be expected under similar conditions in the U.K, but the effect on speed of increased flow was less in Indonesia then in U.K. (approx. 50 % less . text |
