THE INFLUENCE OF FLY - ASH AS A FILLER ON SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF HOT ROLLED ASPHALT
Fly ash is obtained by burning pulverised coal in an electricity power plant. Since the opening of the Suralaya power plant at Merak, West Java, the first coal-fired steam power plant in Indonesia, a large quantity of fly ash has been and will continue to be produced in Indonesia. Many countries hav...

Since the opening of the Suralaya power plant at Merak, West Java, the first coal-fired steam power plant in Indonesia, a large quantity of fly ash has been and will continue to be produced in Indonesia. Many countries have been using this material on construction projects, including road construction. The objective of this research is to investigate the laboratory performance of Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) using fly ash as a filler. Over the past few years, HRA has been extensively used in Indonesia as a wearing course material. Among the various constituents of HRA, filler is one of the more expensive apart from the bitumen itself. A commonly used filler material is Portland cement. For purposes of comparison, the laboratory performance of mixes containing Portland cement was also investigated. The laboratory characteristics of HRA that were investigated were stability, flexibility and the resistance of the mix to water damage. The results of the investigation suggest that fly ash may be successfully substituted for Portland cement as a filler in Hot Rolled Asphalt mortar. An economic analysis of the use of fly ash in highway construction is beyond of the scope of this thesis. text |
