CONE PENETROMETER, Djatnika,, B., 1987, Program Sistem dan Teknik Jalan Raya, Fakultas Pasca Sarjana, Institut Teknologi Bandung. The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) has been widely used in estimating the strength of soils as it is a simple, inexpensive apparatus and gives a rapid measure of in-situ strength. DCP strength measurements have been found to correlate significantly with California Bearing Ratio in the case of mechanically stabilised materials. It is of interest to determine if the DCP might be a reliable alternative to the unconfined compressive strength test for evaluating the strength of additive-stabilised soils. The purpose of the laboratory research program described in this thesis is to establish if any correlation exists between unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and penetration depth (DN) of the DCP for lime-stabilised soils. The DCP used was identical to that used by Harison (1984); the cone has an angle of 60° and a weight of 8 kg is dropped through a distance of 575 mm. Materials selected for lime stabilisation were clay, sandy clay and silty clay. The clay is classified as CH according to USCS and A-7-5(20) according to AASHO. The corresponding classifications for sandy clay and silty clay are CH, A-7-6(20) and MH, A-7-5(18), respectively. A wide range in strength was obtained by varying lime content, water content, compactive effort and curing period. Correlation between the two methods of strength measurement was examined on the basis of a \'log-log\' and an \'inverse\' model of data presentation. The results show that strong correlation exists between the UCS and the DN for individual soil types, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.93 to 0.95. Correlation coefficients for combined data ranged from 0.69 to 0.82. The correlation between UCS and DN is best represented by the log-log model. Models which estimate the 15 percentile of the predicted UCS value for a particular DN value are also presented. Relationships established are relatively unchanged when data from mechanically stabilised soil, i.e. zero lime, are introduced into the analysis. text
