Since the 11th century, Tuban had taken part in primordial trade port between “West” and “East”, thus it received external/ foreign culture. This development of inhabitants bond created has affected the material cultural transformation in Tuban. From those varied developing tradition and culture, making clothes is one of them. The structure of material Tuban culture reflected in batik clothes and gedog weaving has particular characteristics as the unique knowledge of Tuban traditional people in the process of making, function, dressing in, and the values and philosophical meanings containing in each piece of cloth. In fact, nowadays cloth tradition in Tuban has been shifted onto: 1) decreasing the values and philosophical meanings in society, 2) a lot of gedog weaving makers leaving this weaving skills, 3) The transformation on the esthetic aspect for the existence of the new various motif which is not taken from traditional inspiration, 4) function and dressing in as sayut and jarit which are getting disappear. <br /> <br /> In facing such condition, the effort to maintain the existence and tradition vigor is insufficient to be done not only in conservative ways by preserving tradition to avoid the change of its original structure, but also increasing tradition through varied innovation. It is explained in evolusionis memetic theory that a traditional culture can survive not only because of the people duplicating the values and ideas remaining on the tradition, but also the tradition shift to adapt for surviving itself in a rapid change of innovation types. <br /> <br /> The research method is begun with strategy understanding to recognize the essential aspects that initiate a cloth creation to be implemented as a consideration in deciding innovation strategy. Furthermore, the innovation strategy is implemented directly to the people with innovation diffusion theory that involves the weaving and batik societies in Tuban in order to measure the people eagerness in accepting transformation. The innovation forms on batik cloth and Kerek gedog weaving still demonstrate tradition identity experiencing development on the new structures of gedog weaving with various structures on the cloth surface. Technology collaboration has produced several variations of new decoration <br /> <br /> designs, and development of product function which are not limited to sayut and jarit. It is able to transform a cloth product of designers’ creations. text |
