Indonesia has great potential of biomass, but only a few of that is utilized. Biomass is available in various forms, those are forestry and agricultural waste or energy crops. Biomass that is utilized in this research is empty fruit bunches of palm oil. The method used to convert biomass to be energy is gasification. Gasification is a process to convert thermochemically biomass or hydrocarbon to synthesis gas (CO, CO2, H2O, H2, CH4) with gasification agent (air, steam, or oxygen). In general, synthesis gas has great concentration of hydrogen or H2/CO ratio so can be used as energy sources. The challenge in gasification process is the amount of tar which is produced. One of the method to reduce the amount of tar production is using char from pyrolysis as raw material for gasification. Pyrolysis will release volatile matter in biomass, so char for gasification will have low content of volatile matter. Pyrolysis process will affect the physical properties of char that is produced, such as the concentration of active phase, spesific surface area and volume of pores. The physical properties will affect gasification performance.

In downdraft fixed-bed gasifier laboratorium scale, about 7,8 gram empty fruit bunches of palm oil is pyrolised in temperature 500?C with residence time in the last pyrolisis temperature which is varied. Then, char is gasified in temperature, flow rate of nitrogen and steam that is kept to be constant. Synthesis gas from gasification is analyzed with gas chromatography. In this research, the affect of residence time in pyrolysis process will be reviewed to production gas from gasification. The research indicate if residence time in pyrolisis process is longer, so the amount of char production will be better which can make steam to react well with char and make the synthesis gas production to be better.

text
