The strength of subgrades is most commonly assessed by measuring the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of the soil. This test is time consuming, requires a relatively large soil sample if determined in the laboratory and involves the use of costly equipment. Much research has been done to establish relationship between CBR value and other soil characteristics that can be measured more quickly and cheaply. However, little data is available to indicate the extent to which such relationships may be applied to Indonesia soils. The purposes of the laboratory-based research described in this thesis was to assess the applicability to Indonesian conditions of correlations already established and to attempt to correlate CBR values with static cone penetration resistance. Samples of four different soil types taken from various borrow pits were studied. According to the AASHTO soil classification systems, all the material used may be classified as A-7-5. The results of the research programme indicate that, in general, correlations that have been established between CBR and other soil characteristics (e.g. plasticity, compaction characteristics) do not predict CBR to the level of accuracy considered acceptable. Of the various relationships investigated, only two, established by TRRL (Road Note 29) and by BLACK (1962), show reasonably good correlation with the results of the present study with the exception of one of the soils investigated. The results also indicate that there is significant linear correlation between CBR and static cone penetration resistance for all of the material tested. Moulding moisture content, dry density and soaking do not appear to affect the relationship between these two parameters. |
