Description
Summary:
Industrial wastewater such as palm oil mill effluent (POME) contains high organic compound contaminants. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) in POME is higher than the standard quality set by Indonesia government. Various methods have been developed in the processing of industrial wastewater with high COD content, one of which is a microbial fuel cell (MFC). MFC research is growing rapidly because this system can be used in wastewater treatment and energy production. The main obstacle by using the MFC system is use of expensive electrode material and low energy density produced.

This research was conducted to determine the effect of inoculum addition and precoated biofilm process on graphite sheet electrode to the performance of MFC system. Variations of bacterial inoculum performed were from active sludge POME (PO) waste, cow dung (KS) and pseudomonas pyoceanea (PS). The experiment was conducted using MFC double chamber for 10 days.

Based on the experimental variation, the value of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) is 971 mV in P-PS (precoated biofilm by using Pseudomonas pyoceanea inoculum). Maximum power density value is 1156,62 mW/m2 obtained in IP-PS (precoated biofilm and the addition of Pseudomonas pyoceanea inoculum). From the measurement using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) it was observed that the lowest internal resistance was in the IP-PS circuit, while the efficiency of COD decrease produced in this study ranged from 44- 59% and the highest COD removal occurred in IP-PS variation.
