Winding shipping channel conditions, high levels of sedimentation, the number of roads and bridges that cut the Musi river, and lack of port development areas are the problems faced by the Boom Baru harbor. The province of South Sumatra has a huge natural resources potential, especially coal. This is the background of development plan of Tanjung Carat Terminal. South Sumatera's coal production reaches more than 30 million tons in 2017 and it is the province which has potential the third largest coal producer in Indonesia. Nevertheless, the number of coal cargo passing through the Port of Boom Baru Palembang has decreased every year. This is due to the good delivery of coal using land transportation facilities, as well as TERSUS and TUKS then performed transshipment at Tanjung Buyut. Transshipment activities on the offshore as well as in Tanjung Buyut are very dependent on weather conditions and are not environmentally friendly..

PT Bukit Asam is a coal mine developer with a total production of 60% of South Sumatera's total coal production. 83-85% coal production of PT Bukit Asam is sent by train to Tarahan Lampung and the rest is sent to Kertapati by using barge. Based on coal sales data, the percentage of South Sumatera coal exports is 38% -50% of total sales, while coal for the domestic market is 50% -62% of total sales. From the coal production composition, it is known that the percentage of coal exported through South Sumatra ranges between 15% -25% of the total production.. This segment is a potential cargo that can be a cargo of Tanjung Carat. There are 4 development layouts option proposed based on the planned development of Tanjung Carat Terminal at RIP Tanjung Api-Api South Sumatera Province year 2016, but only 4th option which the coal terminal only built the dock along 700 m and 30 m width is worth developing. The port operating pattern applied to the 4th option development plan is transshipment.

text
