Interest in the geotechnical characteristics of the deposit arose when construction of the Padalarang - Cileunyi Toll Highway , which is aligned Across the deposit, was due to commence. A number of research studies into the engineering characteristics of the deposit ensued and were augmented by analysis of the monitored performance of a trial embankment constructed along the proposed route alignment in the centre of the deposit. The research on the deposit presented here has been concerned with the influence of method of sampling and sample size on disturbance during previous conventional borehole and laboratory investigations, and the effect on engineering parameters determined when examining the consolidation characteristics of the deposit. In this case the influence of method of sampling was examined with large block samples taken from large diameter pile shaft operations. The influence of sample size on consolidation characteristics was examined by comparing the results of conventional small diameter consolidation tests with those obtained using 150 mm diameter Rowe cells. Particular attention was paid to comparative values of maximum past pressure and coefficients of consolidation, in the horizontal as well as vertical direction. Results indicated that both sampling disturbance and sample size in testing influenced the results of consolidation settlement parameters, with the former having the bigger impact on the calculation of the total settlement, and the latter on the rate of settlement. text
