SYNTHESIS OF CE-MOR ZEOLITE AND ITS CATALYTIC TEST ON AROMATIC COMPOUNDS
Mordenite (MOR) is a type of zeolite which is commonly used in chemical industry because of its catalytic performance. Isomerization and hydrocarbon cracking can be catalyzed by using mordenite as acid catalyst. MOR has micropore with size of 7.0 x 6.5 Å and 5.7 x 2.6 Å with relatifly high aci...

Isomerization and hydrocarbon cracking can be catalyzed by using mordenite as acid catalyst. MOR has micropore with size of 7.0 x 6.5 Å and 5.7 x 2.6 Å with relatifly high acidity. However, the acidity of the MOR outer surface might trigger the catalyst deactivation by cokes rapidly. One way that can be done to overcome this problem is to impregnate the cerium ions into the MOR zeolit. This cerium ion impregnation can reduce the acidity of the outer surface of MOR without disturbing the inner surface structure of the MOR. In this study, MOR zeolite was successfully synthesized and further modified by the dealumination process. Subsequently, the cerium ion was impregnated into MOR parent and dealuminated MOR. Based on the XRD analysis, the MOR and dealuminated MOR show high crystalinity. The Si/Al ratio of MOR can be determined using 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. The resulting Si/Al ratio of the MOR parent is 8 whereas the resulting Si/Al ratio of dealuminated MOR is 10. The dealuminated MOR is also characterized by 27Al MAS NMR and showed that the Al atom was reduced by 15%. The crystal morphology of cerium ion impregnated MOR and the dealuminated MOR products were observed through SEM-EDX equipped with mapping. The distribution of cerium ions are evenly distributed on the parent surface of MOR while the cerium ion distribution in the dealuminated MOR are not evenly distributed. Based on the percentage of cerium mass that enters into the pores, The dealumination of MOR gives greater results than the MOR parent due to the addition of larger pores. The synthesized catalyst was tested for its catalytic activity on the conversion of benzyl alchohol. The results were analyzed using GC and show the highest conversion of 36.79% by using Ce-deAl-MOR catalyst with reaction time of 3 hours. text |
