However, most of

utilization of crude palm oil is being low with economic value. This production increases continuously

and it is estimated that it will reach 40 million tons in 2020. That is why it is important to derivatize palm

oil products to increase its economic value. The main component which palm oil are oleic acid (40%) and

palmitic acid (45%). Oleic acid or unsaturated fatty acids have the potential to be processed into

derivative compounds that have a higher economic value by undergoing homometathesis or

heterometathesis olefin reaction. Olefin metathesis reaction is a catalytic reaction that involves

exchanging between alkene side groups. Oleic acid (1) was reacted by methanol in an acid condition to

create methyl oleate in 90% yield. In this research, homometathesis reaction of the ester of oleic acid

were carried out using Grubbs II catalyst. Homo olefin metathesis reaction produced 9-octadecene and

dimethyl 9-octadecenoate with 50 % and 47 % of yield respectively. The products were analyzed using

NMR spectroscopy. Homo reaction product was found in mixed form of its E/Z geometry with E:Z ratio

at 4:1.

(formula) text
