Summary: |
Performing Arts Center in Surakarta is a facility that holds lots of activities such as dance, theatre, music, and visual arts. This project is located in cultural heritage area of Sriwedari Park, Surakarta on area of 14.000 m2. Performing Arts Center in Surakarta is a semi-fictional project that was started by the Government of Surakarta according to missions of Surakarta City. The building handles a lot of artist activities, from individual to communities, traditional or contemporary. Sriwedari Park itself is a cultural heritage area, so designing a building in that vicinity should take the style of surrounding building into consideration. This problem poses a challenge in designing Performing Arts Center in Surakarta as a contemporary building that still breathes traditional values. Hence, the contextual continuity approach is chosen in designing the building. As an art communities center, Performing Arts Center in Surakarta is designed to fulfil the needs that may incite art activities from the early process until when the stage is set. From that, each building masses is planned to handle specific functions, but still relates with each other, like performance functions, rehearsal functions, dan commercial functions. This building masses have special correlations based on Javanese Landscape Philosophy which applies axis as orientation track that connects important buildings near the site, like Pendopo and Gedung Wayang Orang. Massing concept from the main building (performance buliding) is inspired from punden berundak which is one of the Javanese Landscape elements derivated from mountain form. Materials such as red brick, wood, and clay roof express local values, while glass and concrete express contemporary values. Other than that, Javanese people behavior, especially Surakartans, like gathering and lesehan also affects in designing the open spaces.
|
