It has been recognized that the specimen size for laboratory testing of soil samples could have an influence on the resulting determined soil properties. Several studies have shown that larger samples than the conventional size can provide more accurate representation of in-situ behaviour, for example in terms of drainage. It is also understood that conventional site investigation practice tends to ignore determination of the horizontal component of drainage, only vertical characteristics being measured, and most frequently the rate of drainage for a particular problem is much faster than predicted. This research on some Jakarta cohesive soils has been concerned with the influence of sample size of laboratory testing on consolidation parameters, vertically and horizontally, by comparing the results from both conventional and Rowe consolidation cells. In order to reduce the influence of sampling disturbance, large block samples were obtained from large diameter bored piling operations. The results have shown that consolidation parameters obtained from the Rowe cell tests are mostly larger than those obtained from the conventional consolidation tests. In addition, in terms of the determination of total settlement the former indicates a smaller value over the normal range of applied stresses
