This thesis describes a study of the effect of placement condition with and without lime on the swelling characteristics of two expansive Indonesian clays. The clay soil was taken from the Cepu-Bojonegoro and Ngawi-Caruban regions of East Java and was subjected to a wide range of tests in the laboratory. Tests on disturbed samples included standard classification tests, determination of dry density water content relationships at two compactive efforts and investigation of the swelling potential and strength. characteristics of material compacted using the modified Proctor procedure. Both clays were evaluated to determine the influence of hydrated lime. The results indicated that both clays are highly expansive and rate very poorly as subgrade material. The introduction of 5 % hydrated lime had a significant effect on Atterberg limits . Further reduction in Atterberg limits by increasing hydrated lime content from 5 % to 8 % was not particularly significant. The effect of hydrated lime on compaction characteristics was to reduce maximum dry density and increase optimum water content. The swelling potential was reduced significantly and CBR values increased. The effect was most significant when 5 % hydrated lime was added. Increase on hydrated lime content from 5 % to 8 % resulted in little further improvement. Swelling pressure measurements were made on -untreated samples of Cepu clay at different dry densities and water contents and the main findings are described as follows : - High dry density and low water content; value of swelling pressure was found to be high. - Low dry density and high water content; value of swelling pressure was found to be low. - At constant dry density, increasing- the water content reduces the swelling pressure. - At constant water content, increasing the dry density increases the swelling pressure. - The swelling pressure for undisturbed samples was found to be low because of low dry density and high water content. Values of swelling pressure measured for samples containing hydrated lime were lower than in the corresponding samples without lime at all placement conditions (i.e. dry density and water content) text
