One of the unsettling organic wastes in Indonesia is tofu liquid waste. In 2016, Indoneia has 84.000 units of tofu industries with production capacity more than 2,56 million tons per year. The average waste. Mostly, the waste contains COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) 5000-8000 mg/L and Total Supended Solid (TSS) more than 1000 mg/L. One of the alternative to solve the the problem is using anaerobic decomposition process.

The purposes of research are to determine the optimum of anaerobic decomposition hydraulic time in tofu industry liquid waste to reduce the content of COD in the waste and biogas production rate. The used reactor is UASB with polivinyl chloride (PVC) and intermittent feeding system. The reactor is operated at room temperature between 20-30oC. The modified variables are the hydraulic retention times in the reactor (HRT) 2, 3, 4, and 5 days. The measured parameters are COD, pH, TSS in the waste and production rate, composition, and calorific value of the biogas.

Characteristics of the tofu liquid waste used in this research has COD 7619 mg/L, pH 4, and TSS 1035 mg/L. Based on the research, the reduction of COD output increase with higher HRT. The concentration of COD output with variations of HRT 2, 3, 4, and 5 days respectively is 6783 mg/L, 6494 mg/L, 5806 mg/L, and 4722 mg/L. The percentage of COD reduction with the variation of HRT 2, 3, 4, and 5 day respectively is 11%, 15%, 24%, and 38%.

Biogas production rate also increases with higher HRT. Production rates of the biogas with variations of HRT 2, 3, 4, and 5 days were 0,69 mL/min, respectively; 1,33 mL/min; 1,44 mL/min; and 1,56 mL/min and the compositions of the biogas are methane (56,4% -mol), carbon dioxide (42,7% -mol), and impurities (0,9% -mol) with biogas heating value of 16,2 MJ/kg.
