Summary: |
CO2 emission needed to be reduced as it increases its amount every year in order to reduce global warming effect. CO2 can be reduced to a chemical of high economic value using electrochemical process. Formic acid is one of such chemical that is needed by textile industries. Electrochemical reduction requires electric energy that can be provided by solar panel.
This research uses lead and lead-tin alloy as cathode, Pt-Ir as anode, NaHCO3 solution as catholyte and H2SO4 solution as anolyte. The CO2 is continuously bubbled into catholyte. The electroreduction is conducted during 3 hours. This research’ variation is catholyte concentration and cell voltage. The product will be analyzed by using HPLC

The optimum value of formic acid that can be produced is 214.5µmol at 2.1 volt and 50 mA with Pb-Sn cathode. Solar panel can provide average potential of 19,47 V for nine hours a day and average current of 262,62 mA. Therefore, the amount of formic acid that can be produced by using solar panel electricity is 9652.5µmol per day.
