Strength, volume change and index properties testing for some tropical soils in West Java has been carried out. The soils examined were obtained from three locations (Cikampek, Cikalong and Lembang) to find the effect of drying temperature on water content, mixing time on Atterberg Limits, volume change (swelling and collapse) in oedometer testing, and to evaluate the effect of water content variation on these characteristics relative to shear strength. Index properties tests were carried out using standard and modified procedures. Recommended standard swelling and collapse test procedures were followed, and unconsolidatedundrained triaxial tests carried out. The parameters of strength were determined as a function of water content at natural dry' density. From the results of the index properties test programme it was found that the drying temperature had an influence on water content. Variation in mixing time affected Atterberg Limits albeit not to a significant extent. The swelling properties were found to be influenced by initialdry density, clay fraction and type of clay mineralogy. The collapse potential was estimated from published guide values. None of the soils tested exhibited any significant collapse properties. Water content was found to affect shear stength. An increase in water content decreased the angle of shear resistance and shear strength, while undrained cohesion increased up to a maximum value when the water content was near optimum, whereafter it started to decrease with increasing water content. text
