THE USE OF GOLD NANOPARTICLES IN BREAST CANCER RADIOTHERAPY

Radiotherapy is the most widely applied method of treatment for breast cancer patients. There have been several development for radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer, one of which is the addition of radiosensitizers to the tumor tissue. There have been several development for radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer, one of which is the addition of radiosensitizers to the tumor tissue. A good radiosensitizer for radiation therapy is a nanoparticle of heavy atoms. In recent decades researchers have found that gold is the best material among those with large atomic numbers used for curing cancer because it has a high coefficient of X-ray attenuation and biocompatibility properties. In this research the influence of the use of gold nanoparticles to increase the dose in phantom of breast cancer will be analyzed. The photon beam used is an output of a simulation with Elekta SL 15's based on linear accelerator photon beam with 6 MV of energy. The size of the breast phantom being used is 20 x 20 x 20 cm3 (cube shape). The size of a simulated tumor 2 x 2 x 2 cm3 is located at a depth of 2 cm from the surface of the phantom. The factor of increased dose, which varies with concentrations of gold nanoparticles, were reviewed using Dose Enhancement Factor (DEF) and Percentage Depth Dose (PDD) curves, whereas to review the dose ratio of tumor tissue and Organ at Risk (OAR) is reviewed using Dose Volume Histogram (DVH). text
