Summary: | EFFECTS OF ADDING LATEX ON THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HRA MIXTURES, R. Anwar Yamin, 1993, Program Magister Sistem dan Teknik Jalan Raya, Program Pasca Sarjana, Institut. Teknologi Bandung. Latex is a two monomer Styrene-Butadene that is copolymerizedi.n a water emulsion, resulting in milky dispersion of rubber. Latex is obtained from natural latex emulsion containing about 30% dry rubber, termed the Dry Rubber Content (DRC), that is tapped from the rubber trees. To meet the specification, latex is concentrated by a centrifuging process to about 60% dry rubber and is preserved with Ammonia. In Indonesia this is called latex type KKK-60. Latex can be used as an additive in the binder of bituminous mixes. It is claimed that latex-bitumen binder offers increased stability, softening point, reduced temperature susceptibility, improved durability and better resistance to stripping and deformation. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of adding latex on the physical properties of bitumen and on the mechanical properties on HRA and to consider its application in the road pavement. The mix used in this study was HRA wearing course mix based on BS.594 : 1985 Recipe C. The binder used was 60/70 penetration grade produced by Cilaca.p refinery. There were two phases to the investigation. The first was an investigation into the characteristics of refinery bitumen and latex-bitumen. The results indicate that the addition of latex changes the physical properties of the binder. In particular, the addition of latex causes a reduction in penetration and increase in Ring and Bali Softening point with consequent reduction in temperature susceptibility. The stiffness modulus of bitumen will increase also. The second phase of an investigation involved Marshall mix design and evaluation including immersion, Indirect Tensile and and Immersion Wheel Tracking tests at optimum binder content.. The results of this study indicate that the use of latex as an additive in HRA mix will improved stability, retained strength, tensile strength and resistance to deformation. The optimum latex content derived from these analyses is 4 % by weight of bitumen. The results suggest that latex-bitumen may lead to significant improvement in the performance of flexible road pavement in tropical countries |
