Summary: | It takes a full understanding social issues that emerged as the impact of gated community. Those issues can be accomodated by the concept of social sustainability. Social sustainability is important to be studied because it can fully described the social issues of gated community. Social sustainability in this study represents sustainability of social dimension. It refers to the condition of the absence of social problems due to the existance of gated community, especially the segregation and inequality. This could be achieved by the social capital and social integration that prevent the emergence of social problems. <br />

Pasuruan regency as the suburban of Gerbangkertosusila metropolitan has strategic location that connecting two major cities in East Java (Malang and Surabaya). This location advantage become the appeal of housing development by developer or gated community. Pasuruan regency also has the highest population growht rate among the other suburban of Gerbangkertosusila metropolitan, which means the housing demand including gated community will increase as well. One of the biggest gated community in Pasuruan is the Taman dayu. The Taman Dayu as the biggest gated community in Pasuruan is possible to generate enormouse impact that can cause more complex problems. <br />

This study aims to asess social capital, social integration and social sustainability of gated community the Taman Dayu. The social sustainability of gated community the Taman Dayu is considered important to be studied because the Taman Dayu as the biggest gated community in Pasuruan has possibility to generate greater impact. The social sustainability in this study is assessed from several indicators. The indicators are social capital (social networks trust and reciprocity) and social integration (point of view towards social and spatial segregation and accessibility to facility). The data obtained from questionnaire survey and analyzed using cmposite index. <br />

This study was conducted through five stages. First is the literature review to determine issues, indictaros and methods. Second is preparation of survey design, observation and questionnaire form to collect primary data. Third is data collection, observation used to collect the physical environment data and questionnaire used to collect the preception of gated community residents about social capital and social integration. Fourth is data compilation and analysis. Fifth is formulation of recommendation related to the analysis result. <br />

This study revealed that social sustainability of gated community the Taman Dayu is moderate which means gated community the Taman Dayu has social capital and social integration but it needs to be improved. Furthermore, the community interacts, creates and cooperates among each other, but not every household is involved. Therefore, the social sustainability of gated community the Taman dayu needs to be improved to prevent social problems, such as inequality, segregation and social tensions. <br />

The social sustainability of gated community the Taman Dayu can be improved by several efforts in order to prevent various social problems, such as inequality, segregation and social tensions. These efforts are increasing community participation and integrating the policy related to gated community with spatial planning. The findings of this study are expected to be considered by planners and policy makers to minimise the social problems of gated community the Taman Dayu and encourage sustainable development. <br />
