Previous researches shows that ICU environment could gave negative impact both for patients and nurses. Even so, the nurses have to perform the best treatment all the time during their shift. The effort to improve comfort level of the sonic environment of the ICU so far focused only on reducing Leq without further considering nurses’ perception. Even though nurses perception is important in determining comfort level of an ICU.

In-situ measurement resulting in three soundscape dimensions that describe factors that influence nurses’ perception towards the sonic environment of an ICU: Information, Dinamics, Comfort. Two alternative solutions were proposed to improve those perception, which is level adjustment of the medical equipment and soundscape intervention. To analyze how the nurses respond to the solutions proposed, experiment was carried out using soundscape simulator. Three stimuli was tested through listening test: 1. Soundscape composition, with adjustable sound source’s level, 2. Reproduced sonic environment of the real ICU, and 3. Reproduced sonic environment with soundscape intervention. Assessment of the nurses’ respond was done using written questionnaire.

Soundscape composition experiment shows that reducing sound sources level can improve overall nurses perception. However, the improvement is not significant. On the other hand, soundscape intervention experiment shows that adding wanted sound to the sonic environment od the ICU can significantly improve nurse’s perception in terms of Dynamics and Comfort, without reducing the perception in terms of Infomation.

text
